November 2006: On the last day of September 2006 the United States of America ended their military presence in Iceland. In a new treaty with Iceland the United States confirm their obligation to defend the island. The military details are kept secret.
The United States Army had been stationed on Iceland since 1941. During the Cold War thousands of soldiers and their families lived in an US Navy camp.
